Global Vote Unifies Obstacle Sports Under UIPM Governance
In a landmark moment for the future of obstacle sports, members of World Obstacle have voted overwhelmingly to disband the organisation and integrate all obstacle disciplines under the governance of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM).
The historic vote, held on 15 March 2026, confirms a strong and united commitment from the global Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) and Ninja communities to come together under a single international federation.
UIPM has welcomed the outcome, noting the decisive result reflects a shared vision to strengthen and grow obstacle sports worldwide through alignment with an established Olympic movement sport.
The integration process will begin at the international level on 10 August 2026, when UIPM formally assumes governance of obstacle sports. National federations will follow, with a transition period extending through to 31 December 2027, allowing time for alignment and implementation within individual countries.
In Australia, Modern Pentathlon Australia (MPA) remains the only national federation recognised by UIPM, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC). During the transition period, existing World Obstacle members, including Australian Multisport Federation (AMF), will be granted “UIPM Member Candidate” status as part of the integration pathway.
As part of this new era, MPA will select its first official Australian team to compete at the UIPM OCR World Championships in Beijing, China in September 2026. Qualification opportunities will be available through events scheduled for May 2026 near Ipswich, Queensland, forming part of a major international multi-sport festival.
To support the development and integration of obstacle disciplines nationally, MPA will establish an Obstacle Advisory Committee. The committee will provide guidance to the MPA Board on the transition process and help shape a unified pathway for obstacle sport in Australia.
MPA President Maki Takken said the decision represents a transformational moment for the sport.
"This is a defining moment for obstacle sport globally and an exciting opportunity for Australia. The overwhelming support for integration shows the strength of the global community and creates a clear, unified pathway for athletes. Through UIPM, obstacle sport is now firmly embedded as a development sport for the Olympic pathway to the full suite of sports that make Modern Pentathlon so exciting."
